Asia and Pacific Writers Network – the first stage of the Virtual Translation Centre.

In 2005, at the inaugural meeting of the Asia and Pacific Writers Network, Dr Isagani R Cruz from the Philippines PEN Centre, proposed a Translation Centre, with “the main objective of increasing the number of our works available in translation from any and all languages into four lingua franca of the region, namely, Japanese, English, Mandarin Chinese, and Indo/Malay.” He suggested that it be located on the Asia and Pacific Writers Network website. We have finally done an overhaul of the website, and have the seed of the Translation Centre sown.

In the Directory of the apwn website, we have included categories for Translators and Translation resources. Our first aim is to assemble information about translators, publishers, magazines, websites, and organizations that are active in translation of the languages of the region. Eventually we aim for the writing on the site to be available for translation with a system for multiple translations and commentaries, and for collaborative translation projects, This of course is a long way down the track, but to begin with, our aim is to assemble a picture of what is happening with translation across the region. Why? As Isagani has said “At this point in our literary history as a region, we are still trying to acquaint each other with our various texts…The important thing is to let each other know what each other is writing.”

The Asia and Pacific Writers Network is dedicated to the sharing and reading of the writing of the region. As usual we require your assistance. If you are a translator or belong to an organization involved with translations, you could register online, here, and upload your information (below); or email information to (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). If you know of websites, magazines or publishers, please forward the information to them, or to us. As always we are open to your suggestions.
