Australian Multicultural Literature Collection
Deakin University 2006

The Bibliography of Australian Multicultural Writers was published at Deakin University in 1992 as a resource for teaching and research. It has now been incorporated into a major national online database of Australian writers which was launched by the Federal Minister for Education in August, 2002:
AustLit:The Resource for Australian Literature (http://www.austlit.edu.au)

Since 2001 Deakin University has contributed progressively to AustLit details of recent and new publications in the area of multicultural literature, thereby ensuring that the database reflects this aspect of Australian writing. We are now inviting submissions for inclusion in the database. Authors’ names, biographic and bibliographic details, published or unpublished titles within the range of writing outlined below are required. Material published within the last decade is especially relevant. In AustLit authors and works will not be identified as multicultural; they will all be part of Australian literature. With the author’s permission, however, the database will include information about ethnicity and language, as this is of great value to teachers and researchers of literature.

We are interested also to obtain copies of published works for the Deakin University Multicultural Literature Collection housed in the Deakin University Library. This collection was established in 1990 with a grant from the Australian Multicultural Foundation. The aims of the Collection are to promote and highlight the diversity of Australian writing and writers, the languages in which they write, as well as to encourage teaching and research about writing by Australian authors who have some knowledge or experience of other cultures.

For Deakin’s contribution to AustLit, and for the Deakin University Multicultural Literature Collection we are interested particularly in:
•Writers who are Australians born here or overseas, resident here or overseas, whose ethnicity is not predominantly Anglo-Celtic.
•Writers whose parents migrated to Australia and spoke a language other than English at home (‘second generation migrants’).
•Works of fictional prose, such as novels, novellas and short fiction, non-fiction, such as critical analysis, poetry, drama, biography, autobiography and essays. Material from journals and anthologies is also included.
