AUSTRALIAN POETRY CENTRE FESTIVAL

Thursday, March 27, 2008

Other Australian poets include Judith Beveridge, Anthony Lawrence, Barry Hill, Elizabeth Hodgson,
Jayne Fenton Keane, Tim Sinclair, Jaya Savige, Geoff Page, Marcella Polain, Petra White, Elizabeth
Campbell, John Foulcher, Sean Whelan, Emilie Zoey Baker, Ali Cobby Eckermann and a host of
articulate, accessible, passionate poets.

From issues of poetry, peace and genocide, to spirituality and love, with performance flair, these
poets will read, talk, debate and dialogue with their audience. International multi-award winning
headliners joining them are:
Sam Hamill (US), who founded Poets against War,
Lorna Crozier (Canada) whose trademark is poems on family, spirituality and love’s fierce attachments, and
whose poems ‘become a part of the reader’s permanent memory’;
Peter Balakian (US), writing on the Armenian Genocide and
Laksmi Pamuntjak (Indonesia) on food, film and violence, whose poetry ‘moves you with the speed of a
heartache’.

Highlights from the festival program include a poetry reading at the dawn service on Anzac Day, master
classes with leading international poets, a tribute to Lisa Bellear, a screening of an early film about Leonard
Cohen at Australia’s longest running theatre, the Theatre Royal and a children’s play and nursery rhyme games
by the local youth theatre group. This festival is for everyone, with roving pedlar poets, late night troubadours
reading over cocktails, discussions of spirituality and poetry in a beautiful old church and The House of the
Tragic Poet (a poetry residency installation in the centre of town). The program will officially open with dinner,
music and poetry readings from John Clarke (the APC’s Patron) and ends with the audience joining the poets in a
‘Bed In’ - reading poetry of love and the sensual in a giant bed.
