HOW TO MAKE LIVING ARTWORKS
Biological Science Workshop for Artists

A collaboration between Quasi-Living Group,
Universitas Katolik Atma Jaya and Yayasan Interkultur

A workshop will be run in Jakarta in December 2008 that introduces artists from all disciplines (visual arts, music, performance, literature, film, digital media) to a biological science laboratory and shows them how to make living artworks. Artists are now invited to apply to be involved. The workshop is free.

For the first time in Indonesia, musicians, performers and visual artists will be able to learn from scientific expert Gary Cass from the University of Western Australia about how to use a biological science laboratory at Universitas Katolik Atma Jaya to create living artworks. Gary will be accompanied by S. Chandrasekaran, performance artist and former head of La Salle-SIA Singapore school of art, and Robert Finlayson, writer and arts manager. Together they form the nucleus of Quasi-Living Group.

Living artworks are the latest development in art-making techniques practised in Australia, Europe and the USA. To make living artworks, artists collaborate with scientists in laboratories to create artworks from bacteria, DNA, skin tissue and other living material. Music, cloth and images have been successfully created from artist/scientist collaborations around the world and presented to the public in specialist exhibitions and at major art events such as the Venice Biennale and Documenta.

At the workshop, artists will learn how to use biological laboratory technology to create artworks and will be able to discuss the ethical issues. The workshop runs for five days (11-15 December 2008) and will be held at the Faculty of Biotechnology at Universitas Katolik Atma Jaya, Semanggi, Jakarta. Places are limited to 25. The workshop will be conducted in English with Indonesian interpretation and bi-lingual written material. The workshop is free. Artists who participate may also be invited to join with Quasi-Living Group to develop a unique performance event in the future.

Quasi-Living Group, which is running the workshop in collaboration with Universitas Atma Jaya and Yayasan Interkultur, is inviting artists to apply to participate. Both experienced and new artists are asked to apply. Artists will be selected on the basis of their curriculum vitae (production of high quality work, interest in experimentation) and their ability to imagine using living artworks in their practice.  To apply, please answer the questions below in Indonesian or English (maximum one A4 page), attach your CV and return to (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) by 15 September 2008.
