New title Writing Asia: the Literatures in Englishes
Volume 1: From the Inside.
Asia-Pacific Literatures in Englishes
Editor Edwin Thumboo
About the Book
Half a century of English for educational, administrative, creative, and other purposes sees
the language secure and thriving in virtually all former colonies of Great Britain. Even where
there were strong tides of nationalism trying to swamp it, some with official or semi-official
support, subsequent global economic, financial, and technical/scientific realities have
generated a new and strong lease on life for English, turning it into World Englishes.
The profile of the language has changed as its role and influence grew in the ex-colonies. In
Writing Asia Volume 1, we see 44 contributors sharing their views, an outcome of a
symposium devoted to ‘The Writers Sense of the Contemporary’.
About the Editor
Prof Edwin Thumboo of the National University of Singapore has devoted a life-time to
scholarship and education, as well as penning his own works. In this first volume of a new
series of which he is the General Editor, he brings together the thoughts of scholars spanning
the Asia-Pacific realm on the development of the linguistic legacy of the colonial master.
In the Interlogue series, Studies in Singapore Literature Volume 7, Prof Thumboo himself is
the subject of study by Peter Nazareth of the University of Iowa.
