Protest of the Light

Human beings are like parts of a body
created from the same essence.
When one part is hurt and in pain
the others cannot remain in peace and be quiet.

Dear Human Rights Defenders,

From Sunday night on 5 July we will be holding a peaceful vigil opposite the Iranian Embassy at 25 Culgoa Circuit, between 6.00 and 8.00pm. No slogans, no politics, just candles and the photos of those who have already been killed in the crackdown. We intend to hold this vigil each night until there is some change in Iran, and people can feel safe once again. We also wish to commemorate the hundreds of lives that have already been lost or are in limbo in indefinite detention – hundreds of lives whose loss has been denied by a ruthless and heartless regime, intent only on maintaining power over its people.

We would appreciate some support for this and ask that anyone with an hour to spare, whatever night you are free, bring some candles (and perhaps a chair!), and join us in sending a quiet and clear message to the people of Iran that they are not alone and that their freedom of speech has certainly not been forgotten. We also wish to remind Khamenei’s government that abuse of innocent people will not be tolerated and that a free press and freedom of association are the most basic of human rights.

Regards,

Ardeshir Gholipour & Jane Watson
