STA. MARIA, Felice Prudente

Sta. Maria is an essayist born in 1950.  Some of her solo-authored books have garnered awards from Book Development Association of the Philippines, Ceres Alabado Award for Outstanding Literature for Children, Manila Critics Circle, Public Relations Society of the Philippines, and Writer’s Association of the Philippines.  On 1990, the second year of the Kalakbay Award given by the Philippine Department of Tourism, she was named Travel Writer of the Year.  In 2001, she received the SEA Write Award.

For her continuing work in cultural advocacies she was awarded: in 2001, the first Dangal ng Haraya for cultural management, a lifetime achievement award from the Philippines’ National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA); Women of Distinction Award in Cultural Education from Soroptomist International of Mandaluyong City, 2001; University of the Philippines Alumni Association Outstanding Professional Award in Arts and Letters, 1999; Sigma Delta Phi Alumnae Association Mariang Maya Award, 1998 for Literature (Culture and History); Philippine Centennial Commission Gawad Sentenaryo Award, 1998; National Commission for Culture and the Arts Service Award, 1995;  NCCA Committee of Museums/International Council of Museums Philippines Service Award, 1995; and the rank of Knight in Le Grand Ordre des Artes et Lettres of the Republic of France, 1990.

Her literary topics center around heritage studies, cultural education, cultural environment development, culinary history, development of holistic wellness, and values regeneration.  Sta. Maria’s writings have evolved into a personal philosophy for social transformation.  She pursues ideas she writes about through pro-active cultural advocacy and endeavors to improve the teaching of social studies, arts, and heritage conservation side by side with civics education.  She is a member of the Philippine Center of International PEN.

Maria authored a number of essays and articles in the 10-volume Filipino Heritage book series released in1979, Mabuhay the in-flight magazine of Philippine Air Lines (1985-1996), Manila Hotel Register magazine, Mr. & Ms. magazine (1978), and Woman’s Home Companion magazine (1973-1975) to name a few of the publications that have included her works.  Her newspaper columns were: “The Joyful Cook” on the food page of Philippine Daily Inquirer, 2002-2003;  “Pahiyas” on the Sunday opinion page of Philippine Star, 1989-1996; and “Halupi: Spirits of Reminiscence” (alternating with Corazon S. Alvina) on the daily culture page of The Manila Times, 1986-1989.
