The Company
Huia (NZ) Ltd was established in 1991 and is based in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand. The directors are owners Robyn and Brian Bargh and independent director Brenda Tahi. The business employs about 25 staff.
Robyn Rangihuia and Brian Bargh set up Huia (NZ) Ltd as an independent publishing company in 1991. Robyn had a compelling vision of a New Zealand that valued stories from the people, places and experiences she had grown up with – Maori and Pakeha, rich and poor, urban and rural, academics, artists and workers, and the many forms of family and whānau in our communities, on the marae, at shopping centres, cultural gatherings or on sports-fields.
She envisaged a world of stories and knowledge that would reflect and portray the diversity of experiences of all Maori and their dynamic cultural interface that is an integral part of the evolution of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Robyn believed that a vibrant, profound and respected national literature would embrace the values, the loves and joys, the frustrations and contradictions of Maori people as they live alongside the increasing numbers of immigrants from the Pacific, Asia and other parts of the world.
For over 15 years, Huia has successfully taken on this important challenge, exploring the stories and aspirations of these people of Aotearoa New Zealand, creating a mirror for Maori to reflect and interpret their experiences, whilst opening a fascinating window for the rest of the world.
This contribution to awareness, education and understanding has been both inspirational to Maori people and of significant value to New Zealand as a nation as it continues to define, create and express itself nationally and on the world stage.
Creating Huia books
Huia books are created by people who share this vision of Aotearoa New Zealand, where Maori are the proud and dynamic tangata whenua, the people of the land, while living positively alongside people from many cultures, particularly our cousins from the Pacific.
The Huia education team develop books and educational resources in Maori language that delight and inspire. This work is an important contribution to the national movement of stimulating and reviving the Maori language, which is truly the unique voice of Aotearoa New Zealand.
The Huia team bring to their work an appreciation of the literary and oratory traditions of our ancestors as well as their skill, expertise, innovation, passion and commitment to this shared vision.
The Huia writers articulate the great stories of unique and purposeful lives and provide the inspiration for the ongoing publication of beautiful and authentic books.
Huia is not only an award winning publisher in its own right, but initiated the Maori Literature Awards that have stimulated a growth in Maori writing and have become a showpiece for Maori literature.
