I can’t say that I wasn’t warned. My best friend said, don’t touch her with a barge pole, she’s a yankie doodle dandy and they use everything in the world to excess. Your power and phone bill will take months to recover. She’ll want to know where the dishwasher is, she’ll want to talk to her cat back in America every night by long distance, and she’ll look genuinely puzzled and then incredulous when you tell her that the only way to dry her laundry
PACIFIC HAKA
The silent waka glides over the water. There is static on the intercom. Irihapeti turns it full volume to decipher the voice. It booms out over the water: “I repeat. This is the HMS Tui. We have detected an underground nuclear explosion on screen. We are seeking verification from the New Zealand Geological Centre. This is an alert to all members of the peace flotilla. Please stay calm and radio in your positions. It is vital that we can account for eveyone.
Yarra Dreaming
If the Yarra were made of jelly, it would be easier for rowers to keep to their lanes; they’d be able to use the same tracks over and over again. If they lost balance and fell out of their kayaks, the river’s skin would cradle them, gently bouncing them upright again like fallen tightrope walkers in a safety net.
